MATCHING OUTFITS FOR PARENTS AND KIDS

October 11, 2017
Several rules exist in matching outfits and one of them is that you don’t have to match things exactly. Yes! The fact that you are emphasizing on a matching outfit especially with your kids doesn’t mean you have to wear exactly the same style or totally the same fabric.
Of course, we are much conversant with situations whereby parents just feel the need to sew a new outfit for their kids, simply because they have few yards of the material left, not because they felt the need to include their kids in their fashion budget at first. So in order not to make the material wasted,
You see mums or dads wearing a complete Ankara material, while their kids usually combine theirs with other plane materials. So whatever you choose to do in the issue of rocking the matching outfits, you are absolutely free, as the sky is big enough for every bird to fly.
However, it’s amazing how the Ankara fashion is now popular worldwide. Black designers are really doing a great job in using Ankara fabric to make unique designs which can compete with the regular Top brands we see on the high street today.

Matching outfits with your kids shouldn’t be an issue because we are always here to inspire you. Here are the matching outfits for parents and kids;

IGELE ROCKS

October 06, 2017

It is believed that some cultures used head wraps before the days of slavery so that men could show off their wealth and the level of their social status and so that women could prove that they were prosperous and spiritual.
The gele, being an head wrap, is a large rectangular cloth tied on a woman’s head in a variety of fashions.  The material used to make it is usually of a stiff, but flexible, nature, for example, ofi or aso-oke , and damask.
The gele should cover the hair completely and must be tied at the back of the neck. A lot of modern-day ladies wear their geles with some of their hair showing, as covering the hair makes the outfit feel and look more traditional. It is said that the gele is used to showcase the facial beauty of the African woman and to take attention away from the body.
Unlike a hat or fascinator, the gele often needs a lot of pulling and patience to get the desired style. Because of the amount of effort that goes into donning a gele, removing it intact and simply placing it on one’s head when needed, has become a common practice. Besides the difficulty of wearing one, it can also cause a headache because it is often tied too tightly. And yet, the women continue to wear it with pride.
It is a symbol of elegance, of maturity and of wealth. Gone are the days when young girls don’t wear a gele with their outfit, so it is as much a symbol of the coming of age of a woman but now it is an elaborate fashion statement that even parents love to style on their kids.
Though it is traditionally part of the Yoruba attire, you can now find other tribes wearing the gele as well, so that it has become a symbol of Nigeria, far more than a symbol of the Yorubas. Scroll down to see gele styles…

Proper Care for Natural Hair

September 27, 2017

Well-kept hair not only makes you look good but tremendously boosts your confidence as well. Unfortunately grooming the African hair can be fairly challenging due to its fragile nature. It’s tightly curled structure prevents oil secreted on the scalp from reaching the ends of the hair strands thereby causing dryness and eventual damage. While the importance of genes cannot be ruled out, the tips here will help you take proper care of the hair to minimize chances of damage.
  • Go easy on chemical treatments, it can damage your hair and scalp if not properly applied. At the salon, ensure your stylist takes great care to avoid the scalp while applying these chemicals treatments.
  • Give your hair enough rest between treatments. Avoid stressing the hair with so many processes all at once. Repeated chemical processing combined with constant exposure to heat are damaging to the hair. For example, if you have just straightened/relaxed your hair, avoid colouring for at least two weeks. Also avoid hair styles that put a lot of stress on your hair right after a chemical process.
Dry hair naturally when possible.  Heat drying methods zaps out so much moisture from the hair and contributes damage. If you must use heat to dry your hair, apply a thermal protection product beforehand. Also, avoid robust towel drying instead wrap your hair in a towel and pat and squeeze gently to absorb excess water.
  • Wash and apply deep conditioning treatments weekly to clean the scalp and improve health of hair.
  • Moisturize regularly with a good cream or oil to nourish and add shine to the hair. Pure Shea-butter, Cocoa-butter, coconut-oil, argan oil are natural options for this purpose.
  • Do not comb your hair when it is wet. Wet hair is extremely fragile and rubbing can cause damage to hair shafts.
  • Pamper your scalp and hair with a massage regularly. Using your fingers, give yourself a little scalp massage. This will improve blood circulation feeding the follicles with essential vitamins and stimulate oil production.
  • Trim split ends regularly to help protect the hair from further splitting and damage.
  • Minimize tangling by covering your hair with a silk or satin cap/scarf while you sleep. These fabrics are smooth and do not cause friction against the hair which contributes to tangling. Also, the use of cotton pillow cases can deplete moisture from the hair.
  • Most hair conditions can be improved by eating a well-balanced diet rich in proteins, fresh fruits and vegetables. Your hair is nourished from within by what you eat and drink. Improving your diet will boost the health of your hair, encourage hair growth and improve your health as well.
  • Use the right hair care and styling products. In comparison to other ethnic types, the African hair breaks more easily and as such, it is important to use hair care products specifically designed for it. Good hair care products for African hair are usually designed to improve hair strength and keep the hair well moisturized.
  • Avoid hair products that contain alcohol, sulphates and parabens which strip the hair of natural oils. Their drying effects can cause damage to the hair.
